NWSA YTD TEU Volumes Up 5.1%

Full international imports decreased 27.3% June 2025 vs. June 2024, reflecting tariff impacts and cargo diversion from British Columbia to NWSA in the midst of labor disruptions in June 2024. Full international exports decreased 8.4%. Total container volume (international and domestic) for the month reached 274,537 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), down 14.7% compared to June 2024, but up 9.4% compared to last month. YTD volumes are up 5.1%, with full imports growing 3.3% and full exports declining 3.5%.

A new Economic Impact Analysis found the NWSA, the Port of Tacoma, and the Port of Seattle supported over 265,000 jobs, generating $17.7 billion in wages and benefits and nearly $55 billion in business output based on 2023 data. NWSA operations supported an estimated 52,100 jobs, including 18,000 direct jobs, $4.4 billion in total wages and benefits, and nearly $14 billion in total business output throughout the state of Washington.

Domestic container volumes increased 1.9% compared to YTD 2024. Alaska volumes increased 0.6%, and Hawaii volumes increased 8.9%.

Other cargo stats:

  • Total breakbulk volume decreased 26.3% for 179,338 metric tons YTD as the segment continues to struggle due to high interest rates and the impacts of tariffs.
  • Auto volumes were 147,697 units, down 15.3% YTD. Volumes reflect the slowing down of auto sales nationwide.
